Pranayama in Walking

Walking movements may be synchronized with the breath rhythm. When doing this, each part of the breath: inhalation, exhalation or delays may correspond to a different number of steps. For example, you can inhale for four steps, delay the breath after the inhalation for eight steps, exhale for four steps, and delay the breath after the exhalation for two steps.

The possible correlation between the breath parts can be taken from the breath models that have already been developed and are widely used in Yoga literature covering the systems of Pranayama.

It is necessary to note that the synchronization of movements and breathing leads to the increased capacity and general endurance of the organism. So, walking in the rhythm of the breath becomes quite easy. In such a way, it is possible to walk for tens of kilometers without feeling any fatigue. It also relieves the mind from different thoughts, and the conscious is only occupied with the sound of the breath Mantra in the rhythm of walking.

Today there are still rituals of religious sects in India, which include multi-kilometer processions along Himalayan mountain roads as part of their religious practice. These are made by groups of hundreds of people who march in columns, in step, like soldiers. Their breathing rhythm is substantially increased by regular group outcries of sacred syllables (Mantras) and a drumbeat.

Such groups experience powerful mutual psychic-energy feeding. The most experienced and enduring marchers set the rhythm, whereas the weakest, who are in a trance, follow them, thereby exceeding their super maximum individual achievement and entering into deeply transformed states of consciousness.

The only thing to remember when practicing Pranayama in walking is that walking creates physical stress and, therefore, the modes of Pranayama, which have already been mastered in a quiet state, may create an overload while walking and lead to different functional disorders. Therefore, while walking one may only apply the breath modes that are not marginal in a quiet state. It is required to obey the rules of regularity, gradation and caution. Or, if there is enough experience, it is possible to compensate a lack of physical training form with psychic-energy transformations in order to enter into transformed states of consciousness.
